About 12 km north of Tabanan city, along the road to Pura Luhur Batukau, you will find the holy springs of Yeh Panes Penetahan. Today they are surrounded by the charming “Yeh Panes Natural Hot spring and Spa”, and for a small fee you can come inside and have a look or take a bath in one of the pools, which just costs a little bit extra. If you wish you can also rent a room here and stay the night in this relaxing area.

The place was very popular and often used by Japanese soldiers stationed in Tabanan during WW2. They extended the path to the spring, and also built small bathing sheds.

In the 60’s luxury villa’s were built around the spring, but the financing suddenly took an end and the buildings were deserted. Then it was said that local spirits took over the site, and the sound of weeping women could be heard at night. To prevent that the spirits would stay here permanently the ruins of the buildings were used as sheds for pig and cattle.

The very hot water contains sulphur and sodium and some additional minerals, supposedly good for the skin. The water is today pumped from a hot spring into several smaller and larger pools. The main spring is located inside a small temple, at the shores of the Yeh Ho river which floats by. The word “Yeh” is Balinese for water, while “Panes” means warm (“panas” in modern Indonesian). There is also a fresh water pool here and a playground for children.
