One of the excursions went to Askja, a barren landscape just north of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. A really amazing place, just like visiting another world.

Askjuvatn is a large lake that fills much of the smaller caldera resulting from the 1875 eruption. On July 10, 1907, two German scientists, Walter von Knebel and Max Rudloff disappeared while exploring the lake in a small boat. A rock pyramid is raised as a memorial. (Photo Bjorn Grotting)
